Azathioprine is a purine analog and immunosuppressive antimetabolite that suppresses lymphocyte proliferation by inhibiting purine synthesis and incorporation of 6-thioguanine nucleotides into DNA and RNA. It is metabolized into 6?mercaptopurine and its active thioguanine nucleotides, reducing both cellular and humoral immune responses. In research, Azathioprine is often applied in models of autoimmune disease, organ transplantation, inflammatory bowel disease, myasthenia gravis, and JAK/STAT or NF??B pathway modulation.
