Description

Azathioprine is a purine analog and immunosuppressive antimetabolite that suppresses lymphocyte proliferation by inhibiting purine synthesis and incorporation of 6-thioguanine nucleotides into DNA and RNA. It is metabolized into 6?mercaptopurine and its active thioguanine nucleotides, reducing both cellular and humoral immune responses. In research, Azathioprine is often applied in models of autoimmune disease, organ transplantation, inflammatory bowel disease, myasthenia gravis, and JAK/STAT or NF??B pathway modulation. Provided as 50?mg scored tablets, 25 per box. For laboratory research use only.

Mechanism of Action & Research Applications

Azathioprine metabolizes into 6-mercaptopurine and thioguanine nucleotides which inhibit purine synthesis, suppress lymphocyte proliferation, and induce T-cell apoptosis via Rac1 signaling and NF??B pathway modulation. It is widely used in experimental immunology to model autoimmune disease, transplant rejection, inflammatory bowel disease, and cytokine-driven signaling research (e.g., JAK/STAT)

Side Effects (For Reference Only in Research Models)

Clinical analogs report myelosuppression (especially in TPMT or NUDT15-deficient models), increased infection risk, hepatotoxicity, gastrointestinal upset, headache, fever, rare malignancy risk, and risk of lymphoma – critical for defining safety thresholds in experimental protocols.
